Camera shots, Angles, Movement and Composition:
At the start of the extract, you can see the that the Camera is Hand-held which represents how Jason Bournes life is shaky and unbalanced as he has no idea what's going on or where to go. Jason Bourne walks very slowly towards the Camera and then stops and looks on the left side of the camera looking all confusedhe looks the other way and starts to walk in that direction.

The next scene in the extract is an establishing shot/drone shot in the snow of that is following behind a train from a 45-degree angleit cuts to hand-held camera again to show Jason Bourne inside the train sitting down looking outside a window, but his reflection all hazy looking back at him. The window reflection represents how his identity is a mystery and that he is trying to look for it, but he isn't getting anywhere.

The camera shot changes to a very close up shot of Bournes hand and what's in it. This helps us as viewers to identify what he is thinking about and wonder if he is going to find out who gave him the item.

When Jason gets off the Train there is a hand-held camera going backwards and Bourne is following behind it, and then the camera and Bourne both top, Bourne looks around with confusion on where he will go next. Then the clip cuts to a different scene and Jason is in a lonely street all by himself where there is a lot of snow around him. The scene then cuts to two police men walking towards the bench that Jason Bourne is sleeping on, the viewers can identify the two men that walked up to the bench as police men because they had police batons in their handsThe scene changes to a shot, reverse shot when Jason Bourne and the police officers were talking, but unexpectedly one of the officers' hits Bourne with their baton so Bourne grabs it, but as you can see for his facial expressions, he had no idea he could do that or that he had those kinds of skillsBourne starts to fight the police officers but it ends very quickly when Bourne knocks them both out. The camera changes to a wide shot/pan shot as Bourne runs away.

Editing:
At the start of the extract the scene fades in to show an establishing shot and where the start of the extract is based.

There is a cut out of Jason Bourne when these two actors in black rain jackets, walk into the shotAswell as a car that drives past. It's like Bourne is playing hide and seek with the viewers because now you can see him and now you don’t. This gives us as viewers the suspense of where has he gone and will he be coming back. During the fight scene there is Match-on-Action to help the viewers watch the fight from all angles either from the left or from the right. After the fight scene Bourne there is a quick 180-degree rule that is used to represent that Bournes kills are coming back to memory as they were behind him now, they are Infront of him.

Sound:
At the beginning of the extract, you can hear a non-Diegetic violin playing in the backgroundthat gives the viewers a sense of how the music is being portrayed as how Jason Bourne is feeling and how it may represent a feel of confusion and mystery on what is going to happen next?

You can hear Jason Bourne switching from English to German while speaking to the police men and how Bourne can understand and speak German fluently, there is a Diegetic Sound as soon as Jason Bourne grabs the police baton that one of the police men were holding, the music changes from Bourne talking to the police men than to another non-Diegetic sound of a tambourine playing in the background that gives the viewers the sense that he is not getting his memory back but all of his actions that he trained for in his past life, when the fight happens you can hear a non-Diegetic sound like someone blowing into a pipe and how it makes a low pitch and echo sound this represents how the fight is all quiet and quick because it is at night because it lasted about 4 seconds and then the police men were knocked out and how they fell down at the same time while Bourne is in the middle of them just standing up.

Mise-En-Scene:
The props that they use in the extract are a variety of things but the first thing that is obvious in the first scene is when Jason Bourne gets off the ship, he is wearing a red puffer jacket which the colour of red represents new life and a new beginning for Bourne.

When Bourne is in the train you can see that the red jacket that he was wearing has faded a bityou can see a black or dark blue patch on the jacket that represents Bourne is slowly going back into his old ways before he lost his memorylittle bit after this the shot cuts to and item in Jason's hands, the item was an object that was taken out of his back from this one old man on the boat that Jason Bourne was walking away from in the establishing shot of the extract.

The next scene shows Jason Bourne is a lonely street and there is a use of a blue light hue at the end of the street and if you look at the floor this shows us that Bourne is going to walk on, this all represents how if Bourne takes another step then he will be going to his old ways of crime and assassination.

The scene after that Bourne is on a bench trying to sleep because he has nowhere else to go and then some police officers come up to him with some police batons, one of the police officers wake Bourne up with a torch by shining it in his eyes so then Jason gets up and he is having a conversation with the with the two officers. Then there is Iconography of a fight scene that also symbolizes a Thriller Convention that takes place with the police men and Bourne, another use of iconography is when Jason gets a gun from one of the police men, Bourne then unloads it and throws it on the ground.

  1. Hi Kevin

    Overall Score: 23/50

    Terminology: 4/10
    Argument/ Analysis: 9/20
    Examples: 10/20

Some good OBSERVATIONS for what you're noticing but no overall argument because you don't have a clear picture of WHO IS REPRESENTED (out of those 7 core representation groups) and you don't use your 4 quadrants of information to back up your argument with examples.

Editing has very little evidence that you understand editing techniques - please see notes on marking page.

Sound needs to include lots more technical aspects and looking into how they create meaning.

Overall, some good observations but you need to work on MEANING and how it's created.

Let's try fixing this up :)

    1. Hi Kevin

      Revised mark: 27/50

      Terminology: 6/10
      Argument/ Analysis: 10/20
      Examples: 11/20

Some more points added to this version, that's a bit better.

I still need you to work on your argument. Who is represented here and how? In this case it's GENDER, you're commenting on how a MALE is represented through Jason Bourne's character. Your ideas and arguments around how Jason Bourne represents men needs to be a bit clearer. You have some good examples of what technical aspects are being used here but not really tying it into that overall big picture yet.

Keep at this and you'll keep improving :)
