Disney Case Study Research
What companies do Disney own??
In 1993 Disney bought the independent film company "MIRAMAX" for $60 million dollars... After running "MIRAMAX" they decided to sell it in 2010. With the collection of films they had built up over that time helped them to get much more valuable from when they bought it. They ended up selling it for $660 million dollars.
Then in 1995 Disney spent $19 billion dollars to achier a company called capital cities. Ten years earlier capital cities bought the T.V network "abc" who is already the majority owner of "ESPN".
There used to be a family channel called "Fox Family" in 2001 until Disney bought it for $3 billion dollars they quickly changed it to "abc Family" but as of early 2016 it changed yet again to "FREEFORM" but Disney still owns it.
A few years later in 2004 they bought the rights to the Muppets from Jim Henson's family the amount of how much was spent wasn't disclosed but the Henson family had bought rights for $78 million dollars about a year earlier so its most likely to be in that range, the deal included the rights to use Kermit and miss piggy and all of those characters but DIDNT include the rights to use to the sesame street gang they had different owners.
In 2006 they bought "Pixar" for the price of $7.4 billion dollars at that point Pixar had yet to create a film that is close to a failure as they had created 6 great films.. "Toy Story, a bugs life, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo. and the Incredibles, with cars on the way.
In 2009, Disney made an acquisition that people continue to talk about. They bought "Marvel" for the price of $4 Billion dollars the most attractive part of this deal was the rights to 5 thousand character created by "Marvel". But there were some characters that "Marvel" sold before the acquisition which include Spiderman, all of the X-MEN, and the fantastic 4, but Disney still had alot more characters, and because of this they have had the freedom to create an entire cinematic universe.
Synergy
Synergy basically means working together, separate things coming together to work together for the same aim. The aim of Synergy is to create this consistent and recognizable aim idea of a brand that can be identified among different brands.
Disney also loves synergy as there was this one man who kicked the idea of synergy into high gears, and his name was Michael Eisner. He would create movies in order to promote attractions in theme parks and vice versa. He was his work to become a great success with The Pirates of the Caribbean, but not so much with The Hunted Mansion, and The Country Bears. This makes the viewers want to experience the attractions more and more for the first time.
Disney promotes themselves with merchandise with the "Mickey True Original" brand, places with this brand sell shoes that appeal to Vans , Levis Jackets, and even candy.
Cross-Media-Convergence
Disney had also broadcasted a 90th special on ABC and are having mickey travel all around the world, while stopping at some worldwide theme parks along the way, and will be shown on Good Morning America.
